Dos² (c 1989 'C'ompu-teck) is a "replacement" for DOS with some
interesting responses to commands. Dos² was written by Brian Green with help
from Dan E. Monk. This is our third release--version 4.89Q. Why is the third
release being called version 4.89Q? Once you've run Dos², we think you'll
agree that it's completely in character with the Dos² philosophy (in fact,
we're planning on releasing version 4.5 sometime in the near future).
The major change in Version 4.90C was in the control break handler. The
break handler in version 5.01A was found to crash some machines when ctrl
break was pressed instead of ctrl c. DIRTREE didn't always run properly
in version 5.01A. That was also fixed in version 4.90C. In addition, it was
made into a COM file instead of an EXE file at considerable reduction in size.
The only real change from 4.89Q to version 4.90C is that the cursor has been
funkified. The real reason for the re-release is that we found out something
about CHKDSK that we never noticed before. If your computer has a TURBO mode,
run DOS², and enter 'CHKDSK' twice. First in Turbo mode, then in normal mode.
Or run DOS², and enter 'CHKDSK' twice. First in normal mode, then in Turbo
mode. (Note:that wasn't a misprint. in order to change it the second time,
DOS² must be restarted)
We've run Dos² on a variety of machines, ranging from a 4.77 Mhz 8088
generic slug to a 20 Mhz 80386 speed demon. These machines have been equipped
with almost every type of monitor and card known to man (sorry, no text only
cards). Dos² requires AT LEAST 86,800 bytes of free ram (Or maybe less, who
knows?), and AT LEAST one floppy drive (it might run off cassette, but we have
no way of testing that).
Dos² should not be harmful to you or your computer. There are some
alarming looking "error messages," but don't worry, there are no aliens,
molasses, or problems reading drive Q:. All "system crashes" "Chinese
keyboards" etc. are imaginary and temporary, and can be ended by a keypress in
some cases, or <enter> in others. To exit Dos², enter "I love you"
(without the quotes). If you forget, type "help" for a hint. There's another,
undocumented way of exiting, but that's just because it got tiresome telling
my computer it was loved every time I wanted to make a change in the program.
The only program that can be run from Dos² is DIRTREE, although we
plan to allow other 'C'ompu-teck products to be run as they become available.
Attempts to run other programs are met with error messages.
Dos² is being offered "as is" with no warrantees, either implied or
expressed. It may or may not be suitable for your use. You may not even laugh
at it. All we know is that we thought it was funny, but then again, we've also
been known to watch television. Willingly.
Dos² can either be run just for fun, or it can be installed on an
unsuspecting user's computer. We hope you have as much fun using this as we
did in writing it. If you do, please register your copy by sending $10.00 to:
'C'ompu-teck
7501 N. University Suite 223
Peoria, Il. 61614
In addition to making us happy, registering your copy will make you eligible
for a free upgrade from version 4.89Q to version 4.5 as soon as it becomes
available. Registering will also put you (not toy, as our earlier
documentation claimed) on our mailing list so we can inform you of new
products as they are developed.
The following is a partial list of commands recognized by Dos². There are
others, but I didn't want to write them down (try swearing). APPEND,
ASSIGN, ATTRIB, BACKUP, BREAK, CD, CHCP, CHDIR, CHKDSK, CLS, COMMAND, COMP,
COPY, CTTY, DATE, DEL, DESCARTES, DIR, DIRTREE, DISKCOMP, DISKCOPY, EDLIN,
ERASE, EXE2BIN, EXIT, FASTOPEN, FC, FIND, FORMAT, GRAFTABL, GRAPHICS, HELP, I
LOVE YOU (TO EXIT), JOIN, KEYB, LABEL, MD, MKDIR, MODE, NEW PAGE, NLSFUNC,
PATH, PLEASE, PRINT, PROMPT, RD, RECOVER, REN, RENAME, REPLACE, RESTORE,
RMDIR, SARTRE, SELECT, SET, SHARE, SORT, SUBST, SYS, TIME, TREE, TYPE, VER,
VERIFY, VOL, XCOPY for a list of the commands, in an easier to read format,
see commands.txt.
Enjoy.
P.S. To run Dos², just enter "Dos²" from the DOS prompt. If you have trouble
finding the '²' key, you can run the batch file by typing "Crazy". The word,
not the method.
